I drew this a couple years ago, in 2004. I had seen some other butterfly "hybrids" (mostly animals with wings tacked onto the back) but I wanted to make this unique in giving the character's body the same markings you would find on the body of the monarch butterfly. Hence the gray/black with some white patches. :)
I'm proud of this one!

Say, was this character inspired at all by Paul Kidd's novel "Whisper of Wings"?
Whatever, it's a lovely piece of work!

Actually, it wasn't at all inspired by the novel! I drew this before I'd heard of it, and then a friend mentioned the novel to me.
I'd drawn a couple of butterfly foxes before, but I wanted to strive to make them more realistic. I'd done one with the beautiful blue wings, but the brown underside. This character here, I wanted the colors on her body to reflect the actual patterning and colors on the body of a real monarch butterfly. Couple that with a photo of a girl in this exceptionally pixie-like pose, and that's where this drawing came from! :)
